Introducing CURLVERSATION: Real Curly Hair Conversations

The Inhairitance Journal / Curlversation

Introducing CURLVERSATION

A new series about the women, the stories and the hair journeys inside the Inhairitance community. Episode one is here.

✦ ✦ ✦

Every curly hair story has the same shape somewhere in the middle. There's a moment you wanted different hair. There's a thing you did about it. And there's the long road back.

We wanted a space to talk about that honestly — not the before-and-after version, the actual version. The middle school dance. The treatment that promised it was natural. The years of products under the sink that never quite worked. And then, eventually, the part where you stop fighting your hair and start understanding it.

That's CURLVERSATION. In each episode we sit down with a woman from the Inhairitance community for a real conversation about her hair, her experiences, her confidence, and what it means to embrace and care for her natural curls.

This is more than a hair conversation.

Episode 01

Dree — On Porosity, Product Junkie Years, and Getting the Excitement Back

CURLVERSATION Episode 01 — approximately 19 minutes

Dree has been natural her whole life. Her mother refused to let her relax her hair, and she'll tell you now she's grateful — though at thirteen, begging for straight hair before the eighth grade dance, she very much was not.

The straightening lasted about as long as Florida humidity allows. What came next was the keratin treatment, marketed at the time as the natural alternative. It changed her curl pattern permanently. She big chopped around 2015 and started over.

Leave your hair alone. Your hair is beautiful. It's who you are. It's a part of your identity. Dree, on what she'd tell her middle school self

The Part That Surprised Us

The most useful few minutes of the episode aren't about a product at all. They're about porosity.

Dree spent years building a routine around being low porosity — because that's what she'd been told. Then a curl specialist told her she'd had it backwards the whole time. She's high porosity. Which meant starting the research over, and explained why so much of what she'd been doing never worked the way it was supposed to.

This happens constantly, and it isn't the fault of the person it happens to. Low porosity and high porosity are not two settings on a dial. They're two different sets of needs, and a routine built for the wrong one will quietly underperform no matter how good the products in it are.

It's the reason the Curl ID doesn't ask whether your hair is high or low porosity. Most people don't know, and plenty of people have been told wrong. It asks how your hair actually behaves — how it takes on product, how long it stays wet, what happens by the end of the day — and works it out from there.

From the episode

You can leave your conditioner in. Skip the rinse, follow with your styler, and the hydration sits under the gel all week. If your hair weighs down easily, rinse a little out and keep the rest. It saves a step and stops good product going down the drain.

Definition Without the Crunch

The other thing Dree names — and it's the thing most people are actually chasing — is the trade-off. She'd found a product that gave her real definition, but it left her hair crunchy and she was still losing moisture by the end of the day. Hold or hydration. Pick one.

That trade-off is the entire reason the line exists. A humectant-based gel doesn't have to dry hair out to hold a curl, and hair that's properly hydrated underneath holds its definition longer, not less.

I got the definition while also being able to retain moisture. I don't say this lightly — it is the perfect product for my hair. Dree, on Hold It Right There Gel

One More Thing Worth Hearing

Near the end, talking about growing her density back, Dree and our founder land on something that's easy to say and hard to believe: it isn't one product. It's the routine. It's the weekly wash day you actually keep, the deep conditioning you stop skipping, the consistency that feels boring right up until the moment it doesn't.

Hair responds to what you do repeatedly. That's the slow, unglamorous truth underneath every dramatic transformation post you've ever scrolled past.

Start Where Dree Started

If any of this sounded like your hair — the products that don't deliver, the porosity you're not sure about, the definition that costs you moisture — the starting point is the same one that changed things for her.
